MADISON STREET RECONSTRUCTION -- Just The Facts
“Building Waterloo’s Future – Open For Business”

  • The reconstruction of Madison Street (WIS 19) begins just north of Palmer Street and extends approximately 0.83 miles east to the bridge just east of Monroe Street (WIS 89).
    • Resurface Madison Street (WIS 19) from Palmer Street to the rail bridge (approx. 500 ft.), including replacement of the existing sidewalk on the north side of the road to a 5-foot width and 3-foot terrace.
    • Reconstruct Madison Street (WIS 19) from the rail bridge extending east to the bridge just east of Monroe Street (WIS 89) (0.73 miles). Reconstruction will include removing and replacing the existing pavement, curb and gutter, storm sewer, sidewalk, pavement marking, permanent signing, and street lighting. The bridge between Minnetonka Way and Van Buren Street will be replaced. New sidewalk will be added along the south side of Madison Street (WIS 19) from Canal Road to Van Buren Street, and new street lighting will be added from Canal Road to Minnetonka Way. Existing street lighting will also be replaced between Minnetonka Way and the bridge just east of Monroe Street (WIS 89). The City of Waterloo will be replacing the sanitary sewer and water lines from Canal Road to the bridge just east of Monroe Street (WIS 89).

Schedule

  • March 14, 2017 - Letting
  • 2017 - Construction anticipated
    • May  - Early June - Stage 1
      • Work will occur between Palmer Street and Van Buren Street. Begin removals and underground utility work and removal of bridge structure between Minnetonka Way and Van Buren Street after May 15.
    • Early June – Mid-August - Stage 2
      • Work will occur between Palmer Street and WIS 89. Between Palmer Street and Jackson Street complete construction of underground utilities, grading, base aggregate, curb and gutter, binder asphalt layer and replacement of bridge between Minnetonka Way and Van Buren Street.
    • Mid August – September - Stage 3
      • Work will occur mostly between Jackson Street and bridge just east of WIS 89.  Complete all work including underground utilities, grading, base aggregate, concrete pavement, curb and gutter between Jackson Street and bridge just east of WIS 89.  Final layer of asphalt will be completed between Van Buren Street and Jackson Street during this stage as well.

Traffic impacts/detours

  • Access to residents and businesses on Madison Street (WIS 19) will be maintained for local traffic at most times. 
  • Madison Street (WIS 19) and North Monroe Street (WIS 89) will be closed to through traffic during construction.
